A Planetary Companion to the Nearby M 4 Dwarf , Gliese 876
نویسندگان
چکیده
Doppler measurements of the M4 dwarf star, Gliese 876, taken at both Lick and Keck Observatory reveal periodic, Keplerian velocity variations with a period of 61 days. The orbital fit implies that the companion has a mass of, M = 2.1 MJUP/ sin i, an orbital eccentricity of, e = 0.27±0.03, and a semimajor axis of, a = 0.21 AU. The planet is the first found around an M dwarf, and was drawn from a survey of 24 such stars at Lick Observatory. It is the closest extrasolar planet yet found, providing opportunities for follow–up detection. The presence of a giant planet on a non-circular orbit, 0.2 AU from a 1/3 M star, presents a challenge to planet formation theory. This planet detection around an M dwarf suggests that giant planets are numerous in the Galaxy. Subject headings: planetary systems – stars: individual (Gliese 876)

متن کاملBrown Dwarf Companions to G-type Stars. I: Gliese 417b and Gliese 584c
We present astrometric and spectroscopic observations confirming that two nearby G dwarf systems (Gliese 417 = BD+362162 and Gliese 584AB = η CrB AB) have a widely separated, L dwarf, substellar companion. Using age estimates of the G dwarf primaries, we estimate masses for these L dwarfs from theoretical evolutionary tracks. For the L4.5 dwarf Gl 417B we estimate an age of 0.08-0.3 Gyr and a mass

Precise radial velocity observations of the nearby M4 dwarf Gl 876 with the Observatoire de Haute Provence 1.93 m telescope and the new 1.20 m swiss telescope at la Silla indicate the presence of a jovian mass companion to this star. The orbital fit to the data gives a period of 60.8 days, a velocity amplitude of 246m.s−1 and an eccentricity of 0.34. Assuming that Gl 876 has a mass of 0.3 M , t...

Aims. We present the results of multi epochs imaging observations of the companion to the planetary host Gliese 86. Associated to radial velocity measurements, this study aimed at characterizing dynamically the orbital properties and the mass of this companion (here after Gliese 86 B), but also at investigating the possible history of this particular system. Methods. We used the adaptive optics...
